Employment History

Unix Systems Engineer (February 2000 - Present)
Digex, Inc. ; Beltsville, MD. Primary tasks involved developing software for automated software installation and configuration while working in the Unix Build Engineering group.

  • Developed a template driven front end for the purpose of setting up parameters for a automated jumpstart of SUN servers running Solaris 2.6, 7, 8 and 9. This system replaces the existing system and cut time needed to jump a machine along with a vast reduction in the maintenance needed to maintain the system.
  • Developed an automated build process for RedHat Linux 7.2. Build parameters are entered through a web interface and DHCP, TFTP and NFS servers are configured to allow for an automated build using PXE.
  • Developed the backend scripts and "engine" to install the OS, packages and configuration based on the input from the web enabled system described above. Greatly cut time needed for testing of new build levels.
  • Developed a system for verification of software, configuration and packages as a quality control procedure following server builds.
  • Training includes : Solaris Admin I, Solaris Fault Analysis, HP-UX fro Experienced Administrators

Developer / Administrator (September 1996 - February 2000)  
Raytheon Systems Company; Upper Marlboro, MD. Performed a variety of tasks while supporting NASA's Earth Observation System. Accomplishments / responsibilities include: 

  • C++ development and maintenance in a multi-platform UNIX environment using Rogue Wave Tools.h, DB Tools.h and ClearCase.  Development included creation of classes for specialized access to Sybase databases and customizations to HP OpenView to allow monitoring of custom developed servers. 
  • Implemented an enterprise-wide system performance monitoring solution using Tivoli T/EC. 
  • Created a web interface to monitor memory utilization of in-house developed servers and present utilization in a graphic format.  CGI scripts were written in Perl. 
  • Development of WWW interface for IQ (Intelligent Query) Reports allowing data specialists to catalog IQ reports and deliver reports to persons on the intranet.
  • Awarded a "Spot Award" for key role in External Interfaces demo and delivery to NASA.
  • Subsystem lead for release critical demo to client.
  • Trouble shooting and problem solving in a heterogeneous UNIX environment consisting of Sun SPARC, HP, SGI and DEC workstations.
  • Training includes : C++ Programming, Advanced C++, Advanced Java, Object Oriented Analysis and Design Using OMT, HP OpenView Administration, Remedy (AR System) Administration, Tivoli Senior SysAdmin, Tivoli Enterprise Console, and DCE Cell Manager
Internet Engineer (June 1996 - September 1996) 
Universal Communications, Inc.; Washington, DC. Provided UNIX (Sun / SGI) and Windows NT administration support while serving as technical lead for the design and maintenance of websites for UCI's clients. Accomplishments / responsibilities include: 
  • Successful transfer of services from ISP supplied to in-house. Included installation of a T1 line from MCI that replaced a 256 kbps frame relay connection. DNS and web hosting were moved from ISP to in-house with no disruption in service to UCI's clients. 
  • Technical consultant for newly developed and existing websites.
  • Provided technical direction to junior Internet programmers and graphics design staff.

Programmer/Analyst/Administrator (July 1993 - June 1996) 
Information Management Services, Inc.; Silver Spring, MD. Performed a variety of duties while providing contract support for the National Cancer Institute. Responsibilities included: 
  • Administration of SPARC workstations (Solaris 2.x) distributed across a WAN connecting sites in Silver Spring and Rockville. Network Appliance NFS server provided automounted directories. 
  • Webmaster for several websites developed in support of our NCI contracts (www-seer.nci.nih.gov). 
  • Configuration and maintenance of company firewall using Firewall-1 (Solaris). 
  • Setup of WWW site for Oracle database searching (wwwicic.nci.nih.gov/cbctr/). 
  • JAVA front-end to access SAS and Oracle databases using a Perl CGI back-end. 
  • Windows NT LAN administration. 
  • TCP/IP and Internet connectivity for PC and Macintosh including Xterm emulation. 
  • Statistical analysis using SAS -- BASE, STAT, GRAPH, CONNECT, IML and macros. 
  • Training of new employees in SAS and UNIX 
  • Working extensively to downsize projects from IBM mainframe to UNIX workstations resulting in significant cost savings and increased quality of service. 
Programmer/Analyst (January 1992 - August 1992) 
International Business Machines; Mechanicsburg, PA. Full-time internship utilizing SAS to provide data analysis, inventory control and ad-hoc reporting for the Reutilization Policies and Programs department. Programming was performed in an MVS/TSO IBM mainframe environment. Accomplishments include: 
  • Implemented automated tracking of lost shipments previously accomplished by manually. Resulted in 72 hour reduction in information delivery.
  • Revised various production reports gaining nearly a 300% performance increase. 
Pershing Missile Crewmember (June 1986 - July 1989) 
U.S. Army; Held a Top Secret (BI) clearance while working with the Pershing IA missile system in West Germany. Responsible for the security and control of U.S. special weapons. Honorably discharged from military with the rank of Specialist, E-4. Awarded the Army Achievement Medal and Pershing Combat Badge.
